Lol. Ironically I work with a guy from Belarus. He was taken in by a British foster family after he visited the U.K. As a ‘Chernobyl Child’ (child you was taken away from the area for a few weeks/months to give their system a boost). He can’t handle his drink at all and three beers will see him asleep in a night club lounge even while the music is so loud you can’t even hear yourself think.

Chernobyl child? So basically he’s Superman, but alcohol is his kryptonite?

From what I’ve seen of him working, I’d say work is his kryptonite too. Lol. But he’s a good lad.
It was a thing back then to take them away from the area, give their immune system a chance to catch up. He lived with his grand mother as his mum had gone a bit crazy with alcohol and his estranged dad died of alcohol poisoning.
He’s found some other members of family over in Ontario which he visited last year. Though he says he won’t be moving as he’s British and doesn’t want to live anywhere else.

Yeah I’ve done some reading on radiation and it’s funny how we have this impression that any exposure means inevitable cancer, when as it turns out an individual hit that doesn’t kill you doesn’t typically have lasting effects. But continuous dosages over long time frames (hanging out in Pripyat, radon in the basement) eventually overcome your body’s ability to repair minor damage.

Radiation is a terrible thing and often misunderstood. I’ve seen studies done on Pripyat one where a guy still lives and grows his own fruit and veg. He documents it and eats it and he’s fine. Animals which were once culled to stop them leaving and fences erected to stop them entering have shown no genetic abnormalities from eating the grass, while animals that feed off of animals that eat grass have much higher levels of radiation.
The terrible (though I can understand why) thing is that kids entered a competition to win a ‘holiday’ in Britain, Germany, etc... (I believe some went to Canada a the U.S.). If he hadn’t of made that picture and won he may not of got out at all (Russian officials tried repeatedly to get him back but thankfully our Home Office came through on this one for him to stay).
He still doesn’t know how to wash a ruddy car though, hence why I do it. Lol.
